The latest event from much-loved music night Phylum welcomes homegrown group Diversion Tactics, who are launching their second album 10 years after their debut record.

Jazz T, a member of the group who all met as friends 20 years ago, said they were looking forward to returning to Guildford and showcasing tracks from the new offering, Careful On The Way Up.

“The best gigs are always the local ones,” he said. “We have got the support of people that have been there since day one, and it means a lot to us.”

With his bandmates Squeaky, Chubby and Zygote, Jazz T has led Diversion Tactics to gigs all over the world.

“Our stuff is pretty straight up hip-hop,” he said.

“We stay true to the original sound of hip-hop, it sounds a lot like the older stuff but we are obviously using modern technology to take it forward.

“Our music is timeless, we don’t really follow current trends.

“We don’t really make local music, you can hear Great Britain in the music but it could be from anywhere.” READ MORE FROM ORIGINAL GET SURREY ARTICLE

Phylum's Freestyle battle returns for a one off special; sometimes we come together with friends and family for just one hour in a day of the year to rejoice in all the good positive aspects.

Kane FM has plenty to celebrate this year, our ‘Presents’ events that so many of you attended and supported so vigorously; the Suburban Sprawl festival spearheaded by Dominique and all at the Boileroom / ACM was without a doubt an incredible happening for Guildford’s youth musical community.

Everything we do has community at its heart; Park Barn & Burpham and all over the country, so a big thank you to all those that have joined the pilgrimage to Kane FM’s spiritual home / partnership venue The Boileroom, Guildford; we thank you graciously.

All artists showcased within the last year or so have been diverse and varied in genre; performances included Million Dan formerly from the Demon Boyz & Life Recording’s Sigma to mention a few. It has been a pleasure to work with all musicians, DJ’s and artists and we hope to continue collaborating into the New Year by strengthening our musical roots in and around the borough.

We also formed a new working partnership that enabled content from our events to be shared online; Mixcloud.com/kanefm is a UK based system which aims to assist DJ’s promote material via an integrated community and provides a cool widget that displays content on personal websites and or other social media sites. This has proved popular in additional to our new Myspace.com/kanefm broadening our reach to a new audience.

As you are aware, the licensing process has been a LONG journey and Ofcom have on numerous occasions committed to a date, then reneged for reasons out of their control. Many people ask that one question that runs deep in the core of our soul; a question that will hound us forever.

“When will the station be back on air!!,” Rest assured we hope to have an answer from Ofcom early next year; the Chairman, Directors and production team are all working relentlessly towards the future of our community radio station Kane FM that was recently described by one of our Beatpoll competition winners Luke Simmons as bringing “Hope” to the scene!

The production teams have recently been working with Fabric for a series of DJ Mixes; again this is HUGE for both you and for Kane FM and will be made available via our mixcloud / myspace in the New Year.

The rest… well that would be telling.. You will just have to wait and see. We have learnt this year that Kane FM is no longer just trying to be a radio station, but stands for something more. It stands for communities empowering themselves though music and provides local artists more opportunities though events or online participation. We are so proud of all those who continue to join our team and add their hearts and souls to such a wonderful vehicle for the community.

Finally, a special mention goes to Jake and Stuart at Getsurrey.co.uk/kanefm for providing us with the opportunity to share Kane FM’s content to a wider audience and all who wish to consume it.

From all at Kane FM, we wish you a merry festive season and we hope to see you all on Boxing Day at Diversion Tactics 2nd Album Launch party; we look forward to blessing your ears in the community further next year.

Fulfilling

Bless.

Kane FM Fam.

New online DJ mix's now available on KANE FM's Mixcloud page..

Dubstep Mix from Rob Sparx; Rob has been writing and DJing dance music since the late 90s. Robs first release in Jan 2004 "Rob the Builder - Can you fix it", was the start of a wave of drum n bass releases on Twisted Individual's label's Grid, Zombie and Up Yours. Never one to be pigeonholed Rob soon experimented with other genres producing breaks, house/electro, trance and dubstep. In 2007 Rob decided to concentrate mainly writing dubstep as he knew a few of the scene's key players from growing up near Croydon and loved the creative freedom of dubstep that other genres lack.

Kfmp: Rob Sparx by Kanefm on Mixcloud

Also 2009 has seen the return of Cause 4 Concern to wreak havoc with their first full length album. Spread over five separate 12”s to be followed by a double CD, Pandemic picks up right where the lads left off – the leading edge of electronic music. All of the elements that made them one of the most exciting and entertaining production posses in drum ‘n’ bass remain intact, and are both refined and reinforced. Kane FM boss eager to get back on air

THE managing director of Kane FM is confident that Guildford’s budding community radio station will be granted its long-awaited licence in the autumn and believes the result will be worth the wait.

The station applied for a five-year community radio licence in October 2008 and was due to hear back in March this year, but media regulator Ofcom postponed the decision, leaving Kane’s hundreds of fans and artists in limbo.

Ian Handy, who founded Kane FM and has been central to its growing fanbase, said the enthusiasm and passion for the station was growing and he was eager to start broadcasting as soon as possible.

“It has been frustrating but it has taught me to be patient,” he said.

“It has been testing for everyone involved but sometimes in life things are worth the wait and they pay off when they happen.

“The one question I get asked everywhere I go by people who know about Kane FM is ‘When is it going to happen?’

“That’s all I ever hear, people want it back on air.”

The past year has seen a surge in popularity for the station, which Handy described as “a community station representing community music”, with the emphasis on dance, urban and dubstep sounds from DJs and MCs.

Live fundraising events at venues in Guildford along with a growing online presence are all adding to the anticipation of the station going live, and Mr Handy said Guildford had a wealth of untapped musical and artistic potential.

“Kane FM is designed to benefit the young people of Guildford by promoting social cohesion and community development,” he said.

“The online side of things is very important and we intend to grow that process, it can help people understand us and how we benefit the community.”

Along with pages on Facebook and Twitter, Kane FM has recently launched a MySpace page where visitors can watch videos and listen to performances from recent gigs, while the station is having its very own corner of Get Surrey dedicated to all things Kane.

“The websites are great because they allow people to see all the new news and articles in one place,” Handy said.

“We’ve also got our own audio players through mixcloud.com, which is quite a new system but is taking off and it’s going to be the YouTube of audio in the next few years.”

The next big event for the Kane FM team is an evening of dubstep in September dedicated to True Tiger, one of the UK’s biggest street music labels, headlined by 19-year-old London producer Sukh Knight.

The event marks a year since the very first Kane FM fundraiser, and forthcoming nights look set to be even bigger and better, with Javier Espanyol and Roots Manuva lined up for the winter months.

“Next year is going to be an incredible year for Guildford, there’s a lot of great stuff coming out of the town,” Handy said.

“We’ve got some huge artists coming to Guildford, no-one’s ever done this kind of thing here before.

“We owe a massive thank you to everyone involved, most of all to the people that turn up, the fans that just love the music.”

For more information, visit the various Kane FM web pages and stay tuned to Get Surrey.

Original Story can be found at Get Surrey - The group is led primarily by two brothers Chester P (vocals, song writing and occasional music production) and Farma G (vocals, song writing and music production). However, the Task Force family, according to Chester P, also includes DJ Louis Slipperz (music production), Ramson BadBones (vocals and songwriting), Remus, D.Molish, Inja MC (Delegates of Culture, Cambridge), Calculus, Merkamillion, Blinks, and Marley.[citation needed] Task Force officially formed in 1999, releasing their debut album New Mic Order.

Task Force's debut album, New Mic Order, was produced by Mark B and features guest appearances from fellow Mud Family member Skinnyman and Mr. Thing of the Scratch Perverts. Task Force's releases have consisted for the most part of vinyl-only EPs and singles. In 2000, Task Force released Voice of the Great Outdoors, which featured Braintax and Jehst, on Braintax's Low Life Records.
The second of the ‘Kane FM Presents’ fundraising gigs, entitled Phylum, saw headliners The Speakers Corner Quartet performing their unique brand of jazz-fuelled hip-hop in front of a capacity crowd at the Boileroom on Saturday.

Phylum was initially set up in 2000 by Ian Handy, now the radio station’s operational director, and ran for four years in various venues across Guildford, attracting artists such as Skinnyman, Rodney P and Blade.

“It was a pleasure to bring back such a legendary event to assist in the launch of Kane FM,” said Mr Handy.

“Kane FM Presents is primarily about supporting independent bands that represent the people, and highlights to the borough a whole new musical experience.”

The event raised £521 for the station as it continues to push for a five-year community broadcasting licence.

The team submitted their application to Ofcom back in October, and are set to find out next spring whether they have been successful.

Director Simon Foster said the focus on local independent music was part of Kane FM’s ethos, and formed a crucial aspect of the station’s licence application.

“The term independent music has be stated throughout our application and it is one of the main principles of the station, to hold the flag for the little labels and promote the artist and not merely focus on how many units the label wishes to sell.”

He added that the station was also about building relationships within the community, and if the licence was granted he hoped to attract people from more diverse backgrounds.

“The music we play gives a sense of belonging and can act as universal communicator, ascending race, age and sex,” Mr Foster said.

“We hope our service will have the potential to build relationships where previously thought not possible, especially when it comes to unfortunate or secluded members of the community.

“We hope that we can help this significant minority with information on what is relevant to them, their tastes and more importantly, events taking place within their area.”

The hard work is set to continue in the New Year as the station holds its third fundraising event, ‘Kane FM Presents Million Dan’, on January 31 at the Boileroom.
Advertiser

INDEPENDENT radio station Kane FM is a step closer to hitting Guildford’s airwaves again after submitting an application for a community broadcasting licence.

The station was a hit with young listeners when it aired cutting edge music including hip-hop, funk and electro during a 28-day trial period in summer 2004.

Since then, the Kane FM team have worked tirelessly to bring the station back and its fate now rests with industry regulator Ofcom.

Director Simon Foster said submitting the application was a milestone for the community station.

“It’s like we’re going for a job, and we’ve submitted the application, had the interview and now we’re just waiting to hear,” he said.

“The next letter that comes back in three months will tell us that we’ve either been successful or we haven’t.”

The application sets out details of how the station intends to fund itself over a five-year period as well as information about its management and policies.

“It also explains output, evidence of demand, and support and details on how we will be of social gain to our listeners,” Mr Foster added.

Despite the agonising wait for confirmation, the Kane FM crew are continuing to lay the foundations for the day when the station is permanently up and running.

The project has been given the financial backing of Guildford Borough Council and was recently awarded almost £10,000 by the National Lottery.

Having played an instrumental role in organising the recent StreetClash youth event, Kane FM have a number of community-based initiatives planned for the future.

These include DJ and MC workshops at the Barn Youth Project in Park Barn.

“The idea is to get the local youth into broadcasting and DJing," Mr Foster said.

“In the future we want to invite some of these budding DJs to host a show on the radio. The whole ethos of Kane FM is built on the community’s involvement.

“The community is core to the station because it produces the actual content.”

A fundraiser for the station, called Kane FM Presents Archangel Records, will take place at Guildford’s Boileroom on Saturday night (November 1).

Five acts will provide entertainment and admission will be via a £7 donation.
