Report of the Borough Honorary Remembrancer

KANE FM, a new radio station broadcasting out of Guildford, was launched in August with a programme consisting mainly of reggae, hip hop, drum and bass and break beats. It was set up by Simon Foster and Ian Handy and immediately gained a substantial audience, to judge by the 6,000 e-mails and text messages received. It was supported by Guildford Borough Council and the DJ equipment suppliers Vestax and Numark. The founders felt that the key to its success was its eclectic selection of music, paying no heed to the pop charts but playing music that appealed individually.
